Just finished reading a good book about the Persian-Greek wars, called "Persian Fire" by Tom Holland. He also wrote Rubicon, which dealt with Rome . Think I'll look that one up.
"Persian Fire" was an interesting read and fairly easy to get through. I feel it was well balanced in dealing with what was essentially the first major east vs west conflict; but I would be interested in hearing from others who may know more about the period.
He must have done a fair bit of research; it covers the rise of Persia through to the end of the conflicts with the Greek states - being primarily Athens and Sparta. It does not cover the later period involving Alexander the Great.
Marathon, Thermopylae, and the naval battle at Salamis are the obvious highlights.
The author is credible enough to identify when the historical records are shaky, and when he is using his own conjecture about events.
Anyways, I thoroughly enjoyed it, so thought I would share.
