The Christmas Parade From A Color Guard Member's Perspective
Our Christmas parade was this morning. Approximately 400 floats and units participated.
People that have been around ACS a while, know I march in the Color Guard with the VFW every year, and have for the last many years, carrying the Air Force flag.
Was 35f as the parade started, but the sun was out and the wind was light.
As always, it brought on emotions among all in the Color Guard. Hundreds of people lining the street.
"Thanks, guys."
"Thank you for serving."
"See those men, son? They're our veterans.", and the 6-7 year old saluting.
"We love you."
An old man sitting in a lawn chair being helped to his feet, so he could stand as the colors went by, placing his hand over his heart.
We acknowledged the crowds periodically by the call of
"Color Guard! Eyes...right!", and the crowd would explode.
At the end of the route, a huge mass of people in the street. A policeman coming into the ranks, clasping each of us in turn on the arm and giving his thanks, and with that, the gathered crowd engulfed us.
It's inspiring to me, as it is to all who marched representing the VFW.
It's a Christmas parade, but the appreciation of the military was there as always.
