The Wiggles' lead vocalist quits due to illness

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - The lead singer of the hugely popular children's group The Wiggles announced Thursday he will stop performing after being diagnosed with a chronic condition that causes dizziness, fatigue and nausea.

In a video-recorded statement, Greg Page said a little-understood disorder called orthostatic intolerance had left him debilitated.

"It's not a life-threatening condition by any means, but it is one that's going to be with me for the rest of my life," said Page, 34, who is known for bright yellow T-shirt. "It means that I'll no longer be able to sing and dance as I want to, and as a result I've decided to stop performing with The Wiggles."

Page, who helped found The Wiggles in 1991, handed his yellow T-shirt over to his understudy, Sam Moran, who has been performing with the group for more than a decade as a backup singer and dancer.

"I'll miss being a part of The Wiggles very much, but this is the right decision because it will allow me to focus on managing my health," Page said.

Page has been battling health troubles since undergoing a double hernia operation last December. He withdrew from the group's U.S. tour in June after suffering repeated fainting spells and bouts of lethargy.

His fellow band members said they were sad and disappointed by the news at a media conference in the western city of Perth, where they were set to launch an Australian tour.

"It's very surreal that Greg's not going to be with us, very sad," said Blue Wiggle Anthony Field. "I know Greg loved doing the shows, it's just that he can't physically do it anymore."

However, Red Wiggle Murray Cook said he didn't think too many kids would notice the change.

"Children tend to centre on one thing so if he's wearing the yellow skivvy (shirt), he's got black hair - he's pretty much Greg," he said.

Field, Page and Cook met while studying early childhood education at Sydney's Macquarie University.

They enlisted their fourth member, Purple Wiggle Jeff Fatt, and The Wiggles were born.

The group was rated by weekly business magazine, BRW, as Australia's top-earning entertainer last year, ahead of actors Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe. The four men in brightly coloured T-shirts, accompanied by a cast of characters including Dorothy the Dinosaur and Wags the Dog, grossed $39 million last year.

The group has franchised its enormously popular recipe to several non-English speaking countries, including Taiwan

I saw this earlier today. He and the co-founder were successful before forming The Wiggles, but nothing like they experienced afterwards.

Strange disease he's been diagnosed with having.

Ugh. My niece used to love them. I never thought there could be a children's show more idiotic than Barney, but I was wrong. The Wiggles were a group of Aussie guys in t-shirts stolen from the crew of Kirk's Enterprise who sang and danced with a "wacky" pirate and some extremely low-budget guys in animal suits. Extremely. Those guys made the singing rodents at Chuck E. Cheese look convincing. Anyway, I'm pretty sure that damned show causes brain damage. It had the emotional complexity of Teletubbies, only it was aimed at children a good deal older.

I'm pretty sure this condition is caused by being in the Wiggles...

Greg Page is afflicted with a condition known as orthostatic intolerance. Put simply, it means that when Greg stands up, his heart does not compensate for the change in posture by pumping more blood around his body for it to function properly. A similar problem occurs when there is a change in the environment such as a warm room or hot weather.

This condition is causing problems with his walking, balance, speech and coordination. It relates to the proper functioning of the autonomic nervous system, which is the way the human body regulates things we don’t consciously have to think about such as heart beat and temperature regulation.

As many as 30,000 people in Australia suffer orthostatic intolerance at varying levels of severity. The condition is notoriously difficult to diagnose. Greg is currently suffering a severe and chronic case but episodes, specialists now believe, date back some 12 years. At that time, testing was inconclusive, because the symptoms were mild to moderate, sporadic, and could have been attributed to a number of causes. All major organs in his body were functioning properly, so there was no further testing done. It is possible that his most recent bouts of illness with two hernias (prior to Oct 05) brought on the orthostatic intolerance with increased severity.

There is no diagnosis of the cause for this condition in Greg’s case yet. It is clear, from extensive testing, that his heart is perfect and functioning normally, however his brain is not communicating properly with his heart and, from time to time, in unpredictable circumstances, results in the onset of symptoms.

Greg is still seeking further prognosis and advice on how to manage his condition from specialists. Although it is not life threatening, it is also not likely to be cured so will require careful management to keep it under control. Stepping back from the very strenuous live performance demands of being part of the Wiggles is now his only option.

“Although orthostatic intolerance is not uncommon in the world population, its symptoms can be mild enough to remain undetected or extremely difficult to diagnose, or it can be dormant for a long time and brought on spontaneously by a trigger, sometimes something seemingly trivial, as it seems likely could be in Greg’s case, or it could be the two hernias that he had last year.â€

“Then the symptoms can become chronic and incapacitate normally healthy active people to an enormous, and highly unpredictable, degree. Greg is fortunate he is not at the fully disabled extreme of the condition, but he is currently suffering a level of the condition that requires considerable further assessment and development of a plan to manage the condition, as it is not likely to be cured, but we expect we can minimise the impact on his life in the future,†said Associate Professor John Watson, Neurologist.

                  Orthostatic intolerance
The symptoms for this condition may include the following:
                  • Excessive Fatigue
                  • Exercise Intolerance
                  • Nausea
                  • Tachycardia
                  • Palpitations
                  • Tremulousness
                  • Weakness - most noticeable in the legs
                  • Chest Discomfort
                  • Shortness of Breath
                  • Migraines and Other Headaches
                  • Gastrointestinal Problems
Interesting ... basically prevents him from doing heavy exercise such as dancing for kids

The Wiggles are Australia's highest earning entertainers with annual earnings of about A$50 million, much of which is earned overseas. To the best of my knowledge they are the highest earning entertainers worldwide for audiences in the preshool age group with their audience mostly in the age group 2 - 6 years old. The replacement wiggle has already performed 150 shows with the wiggles, mostly as the yellow wiggle and therefore the change of actors should have minimal impact on the group as a whole and its success.

                      Seriously?

Could it be to much drugs? Or is it just something your are born with and developes when you are older like scysophrenia (or whatever)?
