What is the purpose of Facebook? Honest question. You set up a profile, add people as friends and then.. what? Do you send messages to eachother or interact in other ways? Is there some kind of ratings system involved?
Where's the attraction in all of this, besides the rather obvious, narcissistic, satisfaction of having a personal profile for everyone to see (Wow!)? I don't get it..Comment

In a large way, most of my friends have abandoned email and IM communication for facebook. It serves rather well as an event planner, and a way to share pictures for those events. It's probably a university phenomena more than anything. If you're not of this age group, you won't see nearly the same use.Originally posted by Winston

Ok thanks, Ninot. So there is messaging involved. It does seem a bit of a mystery why so many would devote so much time and effort to it. The "hip" factor has to play an important part - and would also largely explain why I am struggling to understand any of this.
