  • Cease Fires Are Stupid

Do you know how it is when an AI offers a Cease Fire in Civ? (Do you even know about Civ? )
They offer a Cease Fire, and if you have a government that would like to be peaceful, you have to accept.
You offer a Peace Treaty in return, which is turned down. (Not that it would matter anyway.)
You can bet that the Cease Fire is only being used to buy the AI time to regroup.

Oh, yeah. A.I. = Artificial Intelligence

Now, consider Iraq after the Gulf War, and the following.

After nearly five months of daily clashes in Gaza, Israel and the Palestinians agreed a truce on Sunday that saw Israeli troops withdraw from the narrow coastal territory in exchange for Palestinian militants ceasing to fire rockets into Israel.

Since the ceasefire was struck, at least a dozen rockets have been fired at Israel, causing some damage and minor injuries to civilians in the nearby Israeli town of Sderot. Israeli troops have so far kept out of Gaza.

I laughed when I heard this news report. The 'ceasefire' and the immediate ignoring of it were reported in the same article.

    Gotta love the middle east.

More to the point, Palestinians are stupid.

Rockets don't try to kill people during ceasefires. Palestinians equipped with rocket launchers do.

Those who signed the cease fire are trying to enforce it.

Fringe groups are the ones that fire the rockets this time.

its not clear to me that Hamas is trying to enforce it - they kinda sorta signed on. Abbas seems about to enforce it with a big force though - hope he has the guts to follow through. Israel has refrained from retaliatory action.

There is a mountain of evidence which says this isn't true. The Palestinian Authority has a long history of signing cease fires then deliberately helping terrorist groups continue to attack Israel. They often just want a cease fire to tie the hands of the Israelis while continuing their campagin of terror.

The 'fringe groups' I heard mentioned were the same ones that agreed to the ceasefire.

Yeah, I'm having trouble with the "fringe groups" justification. That's getting old.

to be fair that was only under Arafat. I dont know that Abbas has every deliberately pursued such a strategy.

I think the gist of Spiffs point is that Abbas is trying to enforce the ceasefire.

"Whoever agrees to a cease-fire must be able to impose it," Peretz said. "Violations of cease-fire understandings will provoke a harsh response on our part."

Military officials said Israel has agreed in principle to let Abbas bring 1,200 Jordan-based Palestine Liberation Organization forces into Gaza to help monitor the cease-fire. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

The Palestinians were informed of Israel's decision, the officials said, but Erekat said no deal had been finalized.

Is there some concern about a Pal civil war between the PLO guys and Hamas?
