I used to work for a company that made phono gear, and these people were a plague upon us. There are plenty of them here in the US, in the UK... everywhere.

They are no different from guys who geek out over any number of things -- computers, cars, whatever.

I don't know... The law of diminishing returns kicks in real fast. If you can't tell the difference between a 20K$ system and 250K$ system in a blind test, buying the 250K$ system is foolish.

But I understand what you mean. I'd like to buy a decent amp and speakers, but can't afford them...

Well, mostly because I was the guy in charge of customer correspondence. That meant taking whatever goofy question was asked and treating it seriously. This often meant prying engineers away from their real jobs and rarely resulted in more product sold, which not an efficient way to run a business.

                      The biggest problems:

                      1. Their mixture of science and alchemy, coated with a layer of know-it-all superiority. Many audiophiles refuse to (or cannot) discriminate between the two. And woe be unto anyone who doesn't buy into their goofy theories.

                      2. They really expected us, a manufacturer of assembly-line products, to stop everything just for one individual, whether to run individual response curves out to 40 kHz, hand-wind an electromagnet to their specification, or get into endless debates about optimal turntable-tonearm-phono cartridge combinations, often involving modified. discontinued, or theoretical products. In other words, they have too much time on their hands, so they're always happy to waste yours.

So true. I can't ever see the need of spending more than $20k. Having said that, I'll probably end up spending about that at some point in life - my current system's probably over $1000 and I'm a student...
