In the following sentence: "God is supernatural and beyond us, therefore we can't know if he exists", you're still positively defining God with a definition that indirectly implies its existence (trough the use of the "supernaturality" sophism).
If God is supernatural, then we can't know about him, so you might as well claim right now that it doesn't exist.
If it's natural, then there's no evidence to back up its existence.

Both sides share the honor. I remember Whaleboy being called pretentious for denying God's existence, because, it was argued, "no human can know". That's an accusation coming from someone who, in the same thread, said that God existed.

I see, so responding to a thread is the same as starting a thread.

As for Whaleboy being pretentious that is rather self evident regardless of his belief or lack thereof in God.

Use your head, prejudices do not have to take the rhetorical form of strict religious ideology. A good example of this are the countless "Islam is sh1t and my religion is better" posts.

Most of those "Islam is ****" (I rarely see "My religion is better" added to it.) come from secularists like Oerdin here.

It takes two to make a duel. It really doesn't matter who starts the thread, you just have to look at the arguments invoked on both sides to notice how responsibility is shared.

That certainly that has been the trend of late. I've been hanging around here for a long while, and I do not recall it always being so unbalanced in that direction, though.

Also, not all religionista vs. atheist/agnostic flamewars take places in threads about the existence/non-existence of God(s). Often it's in a thread about abortion or birth control or gay marriage whatever political debate that is impacted by religion. As in somebody posts an article about gay marriage and within 10 posts somebody has either a) decreed that gay marriage is right out on the basis that it's sinful or somesuch similar religion-based argument; or b) decreed that everything would be a-ok but for the religionistas and their silly belief in teh pink unicorn. Then things go boom.

The anti-evolution threads almost always come from DL's or people who register all over the web to proselytize. We haven't had many of either lately

                        a) saying that Islam is **** implies that you believe your own ideology to be better
                        b) most ideals of the Enlightment the common secular believes in are religious anyway with another word attached to them

No the point of DD's post was who is most likely to enjoin into a insulting diatribe about religion or lack thereof by virtue of starting posts?

Save Aneeshm's opening thread disparagements of Christianity and Islam contrasted to Hinduism I can only likewise point to the self congratulatory " I am a proud Aetheist and if you don't beleive what I say you are a moron" threads that come along so often. If you want to talk about Islam being sh1te threads of course there a number of them but guess what. Very very rarely are they couched in the my religion is better than Islam arguements. No much much more often they are couched in arguements around why they don't fit into the modern western world view. A secular dismissal of how stooopid Islam is if you will.

                            Oerdin's ideology isn't religious. AFAIK he's atheist/agnostic anyway.

Well Ok. I forgot about Aneeshm's posts. I stopped reading them that much when he declined to tell us more about the origins of the Hindu civilization.

                                Wise move.

Incidently, when I said "each side thinks the other started it" I was including people's experiences outside of 'poly, because surely that plays into it.
