  • XBOX HD-DVD add-on for HTPC

It works! And you get to send the signal over HDMI, too (unlike VGA if you're using the console).

I already have an HDCP-compliant video card. Maybe I'll pick up one of these - far cheaper than the HD-A1 player

I recognised the 'add-on for' bit as English...the rest, well, who knows?

It'll probably be even cheaper when you can get the internal HD-DVD drives.

Can your PC actually decode it efficiently, though?

It takes a LOT of horsepower to decode h.264 @ 54 Mbps.

I think my OC'd Core 2 Duo will be able to handle it. Right now, my concern is finding capable software. I'd prefer to be able to use Zoomplayer, but might have to go with the Japanese version of WinDVD.

This is actually pretty cool. Are there any other external HD-DVD drives available? If so, how much do they cost?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I don't know of any. The review mentioned an internal HD-DVD drive, which would be ideal for me.

There's an HD-DVD player for the Xbox 360 that connects via USB. You can get it to work, with a little tweaking, with a regular PC. An HTPC is a "home theater" PC, i.e. one you connect to a TV and use as a media center.

The upshot being you get a really cheap HD-DVD player (relative to the others out there).

HD-DVD = a new type of disc that carries hi-def movies.

Xbox 360 = the Microsoft game console, surely you've heard of it

USB = the ports on your computer that you plug mice, keyboards, flash drives, pretty much everything into. You probably have 2-6 of them.
