Technically I suppose I could have gotten some sort of compiler and editor for Windows, but

    a) They'd be proprietary, meaning $$$ or pirating
    b) I already know how to use the Linux programming tools
    c) Redirecting output and input is easy and useful, so Linux wins here too

Plus there's a bit of a fun element involved. I wanted to see how difficult setting up a dual-boot machine would be. I just got a giant external hard drive, so I had enough room, and I was tired of driving in to work to do a couple of hours on the weekends etc., while going over SSH wasn't fun.

I read the thread, no need to quote yourself...
I just didn't know Fortran and Linux had anything to do.

They don't really. But Linux just has a bunch of free tools available which I know how to use.

I don't know which of the jillion ways of handling automounting FC6 uses, but you might want to have a look at /etc/fstab and see what it might say about the filesystem in question. For instance, if it says "noexec" , well, that's where your problem is...

Yeah, I've tried to use it before. It's a hassle. Probably just because I don't know it as well....

                      Huh.

I have a question: I edited the sshd config file to deny permission to people attempting to login as root remotely. This works. However, if you login remotely as user you are then able to su into root (I've tried it) so what the **** is the point of denying the ability to log in as root?

Helps prevent scripts/automated attacks targeted towards root accounts, I'd guess.

You should be able to block root access entirely from remote locations.

Haha. This post is being brought to you via my work computer's browser while I sit at home.

It only took me two hours to figure out how to tunnel VNC over SSH in order to accomplish this.
