I think its interesting that
(1) people assume that a group marriage would consist of many wives with one husband, or vise versa. There's no reason to assume that.
(2) people assume that in a marriage of many wives with one husband, or vise versa, the lone person of the minority sex would have a disproportionate share of the power. I can't think of any other social institution in which that would be true. In fact, I can't imagine having more than one wife precisely because I wouldn't want to be ganged up on. My wife is demanding enough -- why on earth would I want to multiply that?

That's a good caveat. In say, some backward countries like Saudi Arabia, I don't think the women in polygamous marriages (and they do have some) are worse off in terms of equality than those in monogamous marriages.
