You just have time zones that rotate through the clock...

Really, it's not that hard to use local time day-to-day but actually measure it in the background with Unix time.

The point that everybody's trying to make, is that they can use whatever measure is appropriate there while still being able to have equivalents with Earth measures when necessary...

Like 1 planet x day could be 3.7 earth days.
And you could be 5 planet x years old and 7 earth years old or whatever.

Basically you are seeing more trouble then there is.
This is in fact just like using inches and meters, except for measuring time. You have to convert when changing from one system to another, but it doesn't shatter anybody's consciousness as you seem to believe.

Many people have explained it already and it's not really hard to understand, and this is why some people are just making fun of you now (for example, Dashi was just being sarcastic)...

But reread some of the earlier posts and it should be clear.

Also, people get used to whatever system they're using.
To you, a system where it's not always light at the same time is confusing, but to people using it it probably wouldn't.

For example, months don't always start on same day of the week, years either.
Weeks are even completly arbitrary and make no sense at all if you stop to think about it a bit.
Months don't have same number of days etc..
You still are able to function in society I hope.
Also, we don't have the same number of days every year and some old calendars would actually add whole weeks some years.

Spec is making a moral point: Is it really morally acceptable for all the other planets we colonize to be forced to use a Local Time and Universal Time, but Earth gets to be all "special" using Universal Time?

Maybe this is why the Cylons rebelled.

So that years and months as we know them, will be kept largely the same even as we populate other planets.
I don't see how your first point implies your second.

The could keep the second and change the days and years something that makes sense in their world.

For example, in a series of sci-fi books dealing with a not so distant colonization of Mars, they had seconds, minutes and hours the same as on Earth, and just had a different number of hours per day and number of day per year (that last one is not really a decision, just li ke the 365 day per year or so is not really arbitrary or cultural).

By the way, this is only semi related to your post but some of you might be interested to know that the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS) adds 1 second about every 18 months to official times without many people noticing, to keep civil time in line with solar time.
This is called a leap second.

It seems there are plans to change this, which I didnt know about.

What if you brought your dog to planet x? Would dog years be 21 years so your dog dies before it's one? Has someone notified peta?

If I go live in Pluto, since it takes longer to orbit the sun, I'll live longer, too

I'd have Chuck Norris roundhouse kick planet X into an Earth like orbit and rotation.
                              What?

But nobody has asked the more important point. Are there any hot chicks moving to Planet-X? If not, I'm not gonna move there.
