hmmph. Well he lived a long and fruitful life. A very great economist (not an endorsment of any political positions)

I hope, whereever he is, he's enjoying a free lunch.

At the time, Singapore and Hong Kong were about even. Hong Kong has benefitted from the rise of China (another conundrum for him). And Singapore and the U.S. are not comparable, given size and timeline for development.

Friedman created many valid theories, but in the end he became an ideologue who refused to adapt to changing information. What we now know is that free markets are highly efficient, provided there is an underlying infrastructure that controls abuse. Trying to force a free market onto a society without that infrastructure leads to chaos.

In other words, Friedman's theories sound great in the classroom, but have limited uses in the real world.

          Of course, I don't agree.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Well, the general assembly meeting of our student society passed a resolution expressing solidarity with all worker's struggles everywhere!

Then again, the crazy leftists actually woke up early enough and packed the session while the opponents showed the decadence of their capitalist ways through their poor organization. I personally didn't out of bed in time to vote against

You can disagree with reality, but that don't make you right.

Sorry to see him go. He did a lot of good work and came up with some great theories many of which have proven to be accurate. Of course he also made mistakes and as he aged he became more rigid and dogmatic but that's just part of being human. In balance he advanced things a great deal.

A great economist, although too much of an ideologue.
