  • Who is the greater threat to civilisation? Round 1...

This is the thread where you, the fine citizens of Apolyton, decide which of two important cultural icons is the greater threat to society. Our first matchup is....

    Friedrich von Hayek

    vs.

    Morrissey

Now for the tale of the tape...

    Reason for Fame

Hayek: Influential economist/philosopher most famous for his defense of liberal democracy and free-market capitalism against socialist and collectivist thought in the mid-20th century

Morrissey: Singer/songwriter most famous for his work with influential English band The Smiths during the 1980s.

    Representative Works

Hayek: The Road To Serfdom, Why I Am Not a Conservative

Morrissey: Suffer Little Children, Panic, Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now

    Famous Quote

Hayek: "There is all the difference in the world between treating people equally and attempting to make them equal."

Morrissey: "I am the son and the heir of a shyness that is criminally vulgar."

    Negative Effect on Society

Hayek: Economic ideas formed the basis of the economic policies of the conservative Reagan/Thatcher governments in the 1980's; implementation of his free-market and anti-centralization ideas helped destroy England; some experts claim reading of his books may cause one's brain to rot

Morrissey: convinced a generation of youth that whining and celibacy could be cool; studies indicate he may be in large part responsible for the increasing incidence of depression; advocated a global union of shoplifters, lynching of DJs; racist

    Prominent Followers

Hayek: Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, Milton Friedman

Morrissey: pretty much any English guitar band of the early 90's, emo kids

    Friends/Allies

Hayek: Karl Popper, Chicago School of economics

Morrissey: NME, a buck-tooth girl in Luxembourg

    Enemies/Rivals

    Hayek: John Maynard Keynes, socialists

Morrissey: British Royal Family, Margaret Thatcher, Robert Smith of The Cure

    Questionable Associations

Hayek: From Austria, so he kind of sounds like he could be a Nazi; Republicans love him

Morrissey: From Northern England; vegetarian; investigated by both US and British authorities

    Great Secret

    Hayek: Probably gay.

    Morrissey Probably gay.

    Current Whereabouts

    Hayek: Dead

Morrissey Locked in the closet of his palatial villa in Rome, wishing he were dead.

So, who do you feel is the greater threat to our civilisation? Place your vote in the poll and then let us know your reasons in the thread! Looking forward to all you feedback guy!

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

                            Hayek = Anarchism + Greed

The state has been the basis for civilization since the rise of the worlds first hydraulic empires, the problems we may face in the near future (I am thinking mainly of ecological problems) may be so complex that only the state will be able to tackle them in a cohesive way.
