I don't know if I buy that... even the most ardent bible-thumping evangelicals I've met personally have been far more likely to understand and respect agnostics than atheists. But I'll admit this is only anecdotal evidence, and I doubt there's any survey research that would settle this question.Comment

If you say you're an agnostic you'll be (theoritically) easier to convince than an atheist. Atheists state that God positively does not exist.
Agnostics state they don't know (or care, in some cases but not all) whether God exists or not.
Atheism is, in some sense, by definition a faith, unless and until God can be proven not to exist. However, it's certainly not a religion in most cases. It would be technically possible to 'practice' Atheism, but is not generally done.
However, some Communists could be seen as practicing Atheism, if they attempt to 'convert', forcibly or otherwise, Theists to Atheism.
And that's leaving aside Stalinism or Maoism
