I've never heard that only 55% of people could read it without problem. Last time I heard about this (in a chain-mail), it looked like everybody could read it.

I can read it except for sgtrane word. Probably I don't know it. I've heard about this phenomenon years go.
I think it's because of it that we often misinterpret something we're reading though. It's the same thing.

also, I think it depends on how good we know a particular language. I can do it in english, so probably in polish too, but in arabic - I'm not sure, for sure not during the first years of my studies. I recall my thought that when I see polish text, I see words, and when I see arabic text, I see letters.

I got this in a chainmail thingy a few weeks ago. Didn´t say anything about that 55% could read it.

It is pretty funny, I wonder if we can ever fully understand our own mind.

The statment ITSELF implies that everyone will be able to ready because everyones brain processes the letters of a word in basicly the same way (assuming your not dislexic or have some other weird thing going on). I also remember seeing this some time ago and their was no mention of nearly half the population not being able to read it.

I would suspect that when one first learns to read the letter order is critical and the brain processes each element one at a time but as you becomes familiar with reading in general the brain starts using this first/middle/last technique, the letters disapear and you just SEE the word. An adult will have a large enought vocabulary to read nearly everything by this method but because virtualy all the text has proper letter order we dont realize that its no longer important, only when they come to a new and unfamiliar word will they stop and revert back to "letter" mode, we sound out each letter in squence and even say it once or twice to encode it into our vocabulary.

The only word that stopped me was "sgtrane." I had to skip it and go back later to figure it out. That was strange.
