    More corrupt Republicans disenfranchising..... themselves?

South Carolina governor's goof delays his vote

SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, South Carolina (CNN) -- A sheepish Gov. Mark Sanford was turned away from a South Carolina polling place Tuesday because he forgot his voter registration card.

The casting of ballots in front of the news media is a well-worn tradition for politicians, but it was no Kodak moment when Sanford discovered he had left his card behind.

Off camera, South Carolina first lady Jenny Sanford could be heard telling her husband that she had reminded him to bring it. (Watch his wife's stunned reaction -- 2:09)

Eventually, the poll manager at Sullivan's Island Elementary School politely told the governor that he couldn't vote unless he had a registration card.

The first lady's identification was in order, and she was allowed to vote, said poll manager Bob Crawford, according to The Associated Press.

Later, Sanford told reporters that his card was in the capital, Columbia, but he planned to obtain a replacement immediately so he could cast a ballot.

"We had the number, we could read it over the phone, but as a credit to the poll manager, she said that ain't enough -- you've got to have the card," the governor said. "I'll vote here shortly."

Sanford said he admired the poll manager for being conscientious.

His office later said the governor had returned to the polling station and successfully voted.

According to the South Carolina State Elections Commission's Web site, voters can obtain a duplicate registration card -- even on Election Day -- if their card is lost or stolen.

The Republican is expected to win his bid for re-election against Democratic state Sen. Tommy Moore.

Sanford has had a tough few days.

Bright stage lights injured his eyes on Sunday, forcing him to skip campaigning on Monday to go to the doctor and recuperate, AP reported.

Sanford's eyes were red and watery as he stood in line at the voting site on Tuesday, but he told AP, "It's behind me and the prognosis is good."

Oh come on. This is a stupid stunt to try and show that the election is fair despite everything they've done to game it.

Jean "John Murtha is a coward" Schmidt tried to cast her paper ballot into an optical scanner... and the machine vomitted it back out. She tried to dismiss it as the machine was "just warming up" like it was booting or something. Moron.

Funny enough, when we had optical scan machines here in Nevada (except Clark County re:Las Vegas) we really didn't have that many problems with the system. Then along came the HAVA and we had to spend brazillions of dollars to "modernize" our election system to those touchscreen machines. I've personally witnessed machines going down as well as one person having a miscalibrated screen (I would hope that's all it was...). There are states/counties that are similarly "modernizing" their systems... to optical scanners. Gee, I guess Nevada was ahead of the times.

NY State failed to moderninze it's voting systems, to the point were the state has been sucesfully sued for the delays (last time I checked). At the same time, the trusty 1960's era voting monstrosities can't really be tampered with unless you simply break the damned things and make them inoperable.

You might not be able to vote on election day, but you know the vote won't be miscounted.

I'm sure it's just a programming error. The machine was only supposed to reject the ballots cast by Democrats.

You Americans and your wacky voting systems. Voting in Canada is completely ****ing painless.

Fill in a paper ballot with a pencil. Drop the ballot in a box. Leave polling station.

Uhh, they don't check to make sure you are allowed to vote? Or that you haven't voted already?

Of course (you have to show a registration card and they cross your name off a list) but my point was more to do with the actual act of voting.

Electronic voting, punch-ballot voting, lever voting etc. are idiotic.

                    Simple beats complicated.

I love it how the.. company that provided the bad machines last time still gets to provide the new ones

I mean it was only proven that it can be hacked easy and it leaves no trail.

It's called 'The Hursti Hack'. And before you say ohhh that man is what ever, he actually is OK and legit person so there.

Paper and pen. What is so difficult in that? It's only easier, more safe and cheaper. That is, it makes triple sense.

Same over here, simple ballot paper with pencil, drop in a box, all done. Never any controversy over ballot fixing.

It's silly, conservative versus labour gets quite personal over here, lots of mudslinging, and there's a fair bit of politician corruption, but voting corruption is unheard of.. what's wrong over there?

Same here. Who woulda thought the 3 countries who inherited their system from england would be the same.

Just goes to show that if you're the spoilt kid who rebels as a teenager it leaves your whole body screwed.

it seems like we should require an id in order to vote. I know they check your signitures... I guess that's good enough. It's just weird when you live in a state where you need ID for everything.
