  • Running Vista RC2 24/7

Anyone doing it? I'd like to, but I'm concerned about software compatibility (hardware drivers should be fine, I think), especially security software.

For anti-virus, Eset just came out with NOD32 2.7 beta which runs on Vista, which would be my first choice. If that doesn't work well, I guess there's always Avast. But what about anti-spyware and firewall software?

You have to change everything to accomodate Vista?
    Well, that's a good "upgrade".

Windows Defender should work on Vista.

If you want nothing to change, why are you upgrading?

If you want things to change, do you not have to admit that things will need to change?

Changing one thing, is one thing.
If I'm wanting to change one thing, but all the rest I liked fine, you don't see a problem? I sure do.

Then you're welcome to keep using Windows 3.1.

Change is a necessary evil, especially when you fundamentally change the architecture of your system for security and scalability purposes.

Most applications work just fine on Vista, some (which integrate deeply with operating systems) like antivirus and antispyware software need to be updated to support the new system they integrate with.

If you see a problem with this, you really should still be using your 386 with Windows 3.11.

                Asher, follow along.

If my fence needs replaced, should I have to replace the roof, too? The foundation? Rip out the shrubbery and trees?

But replacing your OS is not like replacing your fence; it's like replacing your foundation.

Ok, Shiva. If I have my foundation repaired, but the roof keeps out leaks, replace the roof anyway?

I mean, I don't care. If you 2 think that the domino effect is fine, fine.
All I'm saying is newer doesn't always automatically equal better. Like now.
M.E. was new at one time. I wouldn't call it better, and I think you'd have to search to find someone that would.

I love trying new software, and looking at pre-release versions, but have to admit I haven't worked with any Vista/Longhorn build, not even for a minute. Nonetheless, I have a strong aversion to Vista thus far, I'm sure that I won't be updating my XP to it. The real question is, will I like Vista more than W2000 or less - Windows 2000 is, thus far, the OS I liked the least, of all that I've used.

Not repaired, replaced. Maybe the roof still works, but the fence needs to be moved to accomodate the new foundation.

                        But it's a silly analogy.

Better to think of it as upgrading your VHS player to DVD. DVD is better, but one of the reasons it's better is also a reason for why VHS tapes don't work on it anymore. Would you hold off from upgrading to a better system to be able to watch your old movies, or would you replace them with DVDs? Here, "changing one thing" is not "one thing."

Sloww, just give it up man. You've clearly no concept of what a major undertaking an OS upgrade is.

It fundamentally changes the foundation everything stands on. The rules all change. It's not only like replacing the foundation of the house, but also the environment it's in, the behaviour of physics, the kind of people living in the house, the size of the residents, the size of the house, and perhaps even the color of the carpet. It's huge, things that depend on specific behaviour of the old environment will likely break.

Programs developed at a high level will likely work (eg, 99% of programs for Windows).

I'm still justifying to myself whether I think Vista is worth the upgrade.
