This is what my friends are doing. Being 100% dependent on student grants I somewhat naively thought I would be exempted.

Taxe d'habitation. You have to pay about a month worth of rent in the place you live, regardless whether you own or rent it. The owner has an extra tax (though much smaller) to pay as well. There is also no regard about your income whatsoever.

This is the tax you pay for every service provided by the city. The city is forbidden to raise an ordinary income tax, and is forced to use this (along with the taxe professionelle, which is equally moronic: the more people you employ, the more taxes you have to pay).

For the past few years, the state has granted increasing responsibilities and obligations to the cities, but it didn't send the adequate money.

Obviously, you should seek your French nationality and vote communist so that we remove the ****ing taxe d'habitation, and replace it with income tax.

As a landlord, it sounds like a GREAT idea!

It even almost sounds logical. Since you live in the city, you might as well pay for the services it provides you.

However, as a realist, its a tax that looks good on paper, but wouldn't work in real life. Your situation would be an example.

In NZ the landlord pays the rates (which go to the city council for use) for all the buildings they own. Renters just pay rent to the landlord.

Everyone who earns money pays income taxes, to the central government.

We have federal income taxes, and I think Texas is the only state without state income tax. Sales tax, can't forget that

Right now, I pay $4,200 annually in taxes for just my two rental properties. With something like this, I would get a tax break because my tennents would absorb some of that expense.

And why shouldn't they? Their kids are going to the schools I pay for. The protection of their personal property and their safety is paid for by my taxes.

Yes, yes. I know that they pay income tax so they do pay for that stuff already, but I am paying a disproportionatly larger amount compared to them. Why? Because I am providing housing to someone who can't afford to buy a house of their own.

Are you saying that your property taxes do not effect the rent you charge?

On general principal, I am in favour of the sort of arrangement that Oncle Boris has complained about. It is far better for the public to see the tax and not assume that government is free.

Meh... actually I charge rent based on my monthly mortgage payment, and I have my taxes esgrowed into my mortgage so taxes are (kind of) included. That's why I'm really not that upset that it isn't done here.

Not true. There are many reductions, abatements or exemptions based on family size and income. For instance, households receiving all their income from public social assistance are exempted; there are several millions of them.

You should update you documentation, this has been corrected years ago, in the last century I think.
