On Monday morning, one day before Election Day, an editorial in the Army Times, the Navy Times, the Marine Corps Times and the Air Force Times will call for the removal of Donald Rumsfeld as secretary of defense.

An extraordinary full-page antiwar ad appeared in the Sunday edition of the New York Times on Nov. 9, 1969. In it, 1,366 active-duty U.S. service members signed a statement calling for an end to the war in Vietnam. . . .

. . . Last week, a group of current troops, with support from a handful of antiwar organizations, announced plans to petition Congress with a collection of "appeals for redress," which call for an immediate withdrawal from Iraq. They had 65 signatures from active-duty troops and reservists.

I think that shows you two things.

1. This is not Vietnam.
2. There's a bit of a difference between a volunteer army and a draftee army.
3. There's a reason we have people called "Generals" and a "Chain of Command". It's because the army isn't a democracy

If you couldn't find 100+ out of our what, hundreds of thousands of active/reserve troops that agree on ANYTHING, you're not trying hard enough

I think Rummy should be removed too, but I would never let my signature be associated with most of the anti-war groups out there anyway, which may account for the lack of signatures.

After only a few weeks organizing. And in February, 70% of soldiers in Iraq wanted U.S. troops out by the end of the year according to a Zogby poll, so stick that under your hat and sit on it.

From the article that obviously no one has read:

Since then, the effort has quietly swelled to nearly 500 troops, and continues to grow. Organizers, including 22-year-old Marine Sgt. Liam Madden, say they are currently working to validate the identities of several hundred more troops who have signed on, and will send the validated collection of letters to the soldiers' respective congressional representatives in January.

The group already includes 76 officers, four of whom are colonels.

I wouldn't be impressed by 10,000 signatures. Frankly, we're in iraq because we have to finish the job; yes, it sucks, just like being the dishwasher sucks, or the potato peeler. But you don't get mashed potatoes for dinner without both jobs.

True. If you define victory as destroying Iraq and inflaming the ME against us for the next three generations, we've had a smashing victory. In that case, however, the mission is accomplished and the troops should come home.

The top brass has taken notice. Organizers say they got a call last week from staff on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who asked for details on the number and kind of troops signing on to the protest.
