  • No Sex For You!

The federal government's "no sex without marriage" message isn't just for kids anymore.

Now the government is targeting unmarried adults up to age 29 as part of its abstinence-only programs, which include millions of dollars in federal money that will be available to the states under revised federal grant guidelines for 2007.

The government certainly has an interest in promoting public health.

The government should ban sex, except in certain authorised Reproduction Centres

@ government promoting abstinence until age 29.. at that age, they likely aren't abstinent by choice... well, maybe someone else's choice .

So then they should be promoting safe sex.

I saw a recent article about how an African government finally just started saying "look, if you have sex with lots of people you're going to get AIDS," rather than the safe-sex only public education campaign, which hadn't been working. Each approach has its merits and the two should be mixed.

It's just a paper tiger. $50MM is chump change, and other grant monies don't seem to be contingent. It's all about creating issues for the religious right to rally around.

The South African program is failing because people aren't heeding it. It's a cultural problem. In large swaths of Southern Africa, it is believed that if you have sex with a virgin, it will make your AIDS go away.

In any event, you know damn well this isn't about public health. It's about appeasing the evangelical base with public monies. These abstinence only programs are overwhelmingly connected to right-wing churches and the information they promote is largely incorrect, and frequently dangerous.

At my doctor's office there is a African American Medical video constantly playing. It costantly seems to be in favor of abstinence, and doesn't make any differentiation based upon age (in fact, it is geered towards adults).
