Only 125,000 to 175,000 units were in stores for the PS3 launch. Only 1/3rd of the target.
Looks like a paper launch to me. Sony should have waited until spring for the launch, if this is all they're going to ship.
American Technology Research's P.J. McNealy, in a note to investors, said there were just 125,000 to 175,000 PS3s in stores for the system's launch. That's roughly half of his initial expectations. Colin Sebastian of Lazard Capital Markets estimated the number at around 150,000.
While Sony (Charts) is airlifting PlayStation 3 video game systems to the U.S. on a weekly basis, analysts remain unsure how many it will be able to get on shelves before the end of the year. Sebastian believes only 750,000 will be sold in the U.S. this year. Ken Kutaragi apparently has been ignoring third party game developers too. Ubisoft (Assassin's Creed) and Rockstar (GTA 4) both approached Sony and wanted another exclusivity agreement like last year, but Sony never got back to them. Result? For comparison, Microsoft sold 326,000 units in November and 900,000 by the end of December in 2005. In North America.
Microsoft sold 500,000 by the end of December in 2005 in Europe -- Sony will sell 0 by the end of 2006 in Europe.
They had an allocation of approximately 700,000 units available on launch day spread across all 3 regions. Sony has had about 150,000 - 200,000 units total on launch day spread across all 3 regions.
