I see your viewpoint, being an MPer. There were many pissed off MPers when CivIII was released.

I first came visiting in the mid-late nineties looking for Civ 2 strat discussions, but didn't register. After I stopped playing Civ 2 I didn't come back till Civ 3, when I lurked for maybe six months before registering.

It was the quality of posts on the Civ 3 strat forum that got me hooked - in terms of both gameplay analysis and the standards of writing. Vel, Aeson, Arrian, Sir Ralph, Dominae, DeepO, Theseus, Catt, Alexman and others were discussing stuff that was almost as interesting and enjoyable to read as playing the game itself.

While there were also many good posts and break-throughs on CFC, there was a slight tendency towards a bragging culture rather than an educational one. I feel this tendency is still there today in the Civ 4 forums, with an emphasis on cheesy exploits and heavy map-rigging to beat the game at the highest levels, rather than exploring the full richness of the game, which in my view is best enjoyed at sub-elite levels.

None of this, I should emphasise, is to disparage the good work of many CFC posters, some of whom post here too.

That's a good point... it wasn't just that we had a smart group of good players, it was that we had people who could write well. There are much better players than I out there. Better than Vel. Better than Dominae, better than Aeson (well, maybe not)... etc. But the discussions themselves were fun. We could've been discussing anything, really.

          I miss Catt's AARs.

I also have seen the win, win, win culture at CFC, though a glance at their strat forum today turned up some good threads that were focused on learning/teaching rather than competition.
