In 1999, the media had already decreed that Bush would be the next Pres. In 2003, the media decided that Kerry was going to be the Dems nominee. The elections were formalities.

You messed up . 1999 and 2003 were both the years before the election. We are talking about 2006 'polls' for the 2008 election. A full 2 years away. I fully expect that at this time in 2007 we'll know the guys who are the actual front runners.

Nope. They were shocked by his popularity but kept calling him dangerous and wacko. Behind the scenes they worked him over, getting Gehpart to to take a suicide bomber approach to Dean in Iowa for Kerry. Dean was the front-runner in spite of Kerry's early anointment.

Amazement at his following and his ability to raise money and shock at the unexpected threat he presented to the establishment choice. The media still will follow a big story if its a big story. But they kept chipping away at him the whole time too.

Giulliani allowed people to work at Ground Zero and people to live in Southern Manhattan when he knew what the air quality was. Furthermore, his people failed to properly relay information coming from police helicopters that the building was dangerously close to falling. More police and firemen could have been saved. As long as Giulliani doesn't run, he gets to remain the hero of 9/11. If he runs, this will be widely disseminated and he'll look like the goat he really is.
