If you like to get your hands dirty, and think it is funny to fix things, then Gentoo. I doubt the performance win is all that great, however.
If you just just want it to work then Ubuntu.
On KDE versus Gnome, I have used both, and I would go with KDE. KDE seems much more feature-full, if you can think of something which would be nice to have on a desktop then KDE has it.
