I've used Ubuntu before, and I especially like its package manager, but I've only heard good things about Gentoo. Supposedly, it's better for performance.

Marginally, but it takes forever to install crap.

These sound like African tribe names. What is this, the terminally unPC version of BonziBuddy?

I, for one, welcome our new Ubuntu and Gentoo overlords.

If you like to get your hands dirty, and think it is funny to fix things, then Gentoo. I doubt the performance win is all that great, however.

If you just just want it to work then Ubuntu.

On KDE versus Gnome, I have used both, and I would go with KDE. KDE seems much more feature-full, if you can think of something which would be nice to have on a desktop then KDE has it. Gnome is relatively limited.

Ubuntu, pronounced /ùbúntú/ (oo-BOON-too), is a sub-Saharan African ethic or ideology focusing on people's allegiances and relations with each other. The word has its origin in the Bantu languages of Southern Africa. Ubuntu is seen as a traditional African concept.

This seems to be the consensus. I don't particularly want to recompile everything everytime I install something new. Ubuntu it is.

So I would want Kubuntu then?

                          I can't stand KDE. Gnome > KDE.

Yes, but KDE's interface feels wrong. It's very, um, flimsy.
