  • I have just started my M.A. studies

I have just started my M.A. studies, and decided that it's a good topic for [s]flamewar[/s] thread on apolyton.

Officially I'm doing physics, that's why I do not pay for education, even the opposite. In fact I'm taking courses from physics, but my thesis is planned to be on economics. The lecturers this year are OK and the groups are very small (8-15 men per group).

I have 4 teaching hours next semester: lab assistant in "programming for physicists" and "programming for optometrists". I still do not know why do optometrists need programming.

I'm running [s]pseudo[/s]scientific simulations on university's Quad core Xeon computer and the output graphs look nice, I even hope to see some of the graphs I got now in my thesis.

I still do not have B.A. due to the [s]****ing[/s] mandatory religion courses, currently tricking to solve the issue.

    Future is bright.

'Found it,' the Mouse replied rather crossly: 'of course you know what "it" means.'

'I know what "it" means well enough, when I find a thing,' said the Duck: 'it's generally a frog or a worm. The question is, what did the archbishop find?'

              MA in Physics?

Are you doing painting via gravity or something?

I've got an MA in physics. They often give it when there's no master's thesis involved.

I guess it is an euphemism. What is the meaning?

                      Euphemism?

No, but you would generally get an MSc in the sciences (for a "serious" master's degree). An MA in the sciences generally means that you haven't done a real master's.

MA = Masters in Arts. Thus the painting comment.

Actually, you get an MFA in painting...

Whatever. Painting, philosophy, it's all spreading bull**** on the page.

Really? Over here an MSc is semi-serious, as in good degree, but it's not quite an MPhil. MPhils (outside Oxbridge) are research degrees, that often require an MSc or an MA before. In fact, MAs and MScs here are pretty much the same thing. Again, except for Oxbridge, where an MA is granted to everyone and thus can't be taken as a standalone degree.

Only silly people are concerned with the names of degrees, it's what you do with them that matters. Well, or you get very confused, when a bachelors in civil law, music, divinity and philosophy are postgraduate degrees and a master of arts is an undergraduate degree. Oxford.
