  • Who do you vote for?

Bulgarian elections are today. So, based on the info, who do you vote for (this poll is opened to all Apolytoners, but more info from our resident Bulgarians are welcome )

    From the BBC:

    Bulgarians vote for a president
Bulgarians are going to the polls to elect a president for a five-year term.

Incumbent Georgi Parvanov - who negotiated Bulgaria's entry into the EU - is facing a growing challenge from far-right candidate Volen Siderov.

Mr Parvanov is said to be favourite to retain his post, but his supporters fear he may not win enough votes to avoid a run-off ballot next Sunday.

Mr Siderov, a flamboyant former TV host, has verbally attacked Bulgaria's Turkish and Roman minorities.

The BBC's Oana Lungescu says he has also capitalised on public anger with conventional politicians for their perceived failure to tackle poverty, corruption and organised crime.

Despite strong economic growth, Bulgaria will become the EU's poorest country once it joins, with half of its eight million people living under the poverty threshold.

The third main candidate, running for a group of centre-right parties, is a former judge in his 70s, Nedelcho Beronov.

    Low turnout expected

Mr Parvanov, who is backed by the ruling socialist party, is credited with forming the centre-left coalition that has spearheaded Bulgaria's efforts to join the EU.

A former historian, he has reshaped the hard-line communist party into the pro-Western socialists, ensured that Bulgaria joined Nato in 2004, and is on track to become a member of the EU next January.

Our correspondent says he remains one of Bulgaria's most popular politicians, but is facing a stronger challenge than expected from Mr Siderov, who has been compared to the French ultra-nationalist Jean-Marie Le Pen.

She adds that with turnout expected to be low, the result is hard to predict.

The role of the Bulgarian president is largely ceremonial, although he heads the army and can veto any bill.

The support of half of the electorate in the first round of voting is required for outright victory.

I think I'd definitely vote for Lyuben Petrov, based on the info in the links above. He seems social-minded enough, and his being a general might calm down the nationalists, who capitalize on the flavourlessness of Bulgarian politicians

I'd vote for Markov; he's clearly a superhero:

The notorious assassination of dissident writer Georgi Markov in 1978 ...

A novelist and playwright, Markov had fled Bulgaria's iron-fisted Communist regime and settled safely in London, where he worked for the BBC World Service. The versions of his murder vary, but my sources claim a stranger bumped into Markov near Waterloo Bridge, and the point of his American-made umbrella "accidentally" poked Markov in the thigh.

If Markov had not recalled the incident, his death would likely have been ruled natural, because the assassin had used a KGB "umbrella gun" to shoot him with a pellet that was so small that it was almost invisible. It released ricin, an extremely lethal poison made from castor-oil seeds. Ricin decomposes quickly and vanishes.

My family has a saying: "You f*rted; you sit in it," i.e. if you create a problem, it's up to you to deal with it.

Here, no matter how badly the election is screwed up, I don't have to sit in it. Therefore, I don't get either a vote or a suggestion or even a bowl of beans.

Runoff, that's my guy, but Spiffor didn't include him in the poll options.

                          How about Boris Badenov?

2008 Presidential Candidate (for what its worth)

How about Boris Godunov? Bulgaria probably needs more opera. Or at least more opera wouldn't hurt. It's better to be Godunov to do your job properly; it's a nonstarter to say you're Badenov for it. You only want your dudes to be Badenov to rescue the president from ninjas.
