  • Muslim leaders declare "Fatwa of peace"

BBC, News, BBC News, news online, world, uk, international, foreign, british, online, service

Religious leaders from across Iraq's sectarian divide have called for a halt to violence in the country.
During a gathering in the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia, they signed a document drawing on Islamic texts which say shedding Muslim blood is forbidden.

It urges the preservation of Iraq's unity, the protection of holy sites and the release of "innocent detainees".

Scores of Iraqis are killed on a daily basis in ***-for-tat violence between the Shia and Sunni Muslim communities.

The meeting was held by the 57-member Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).

The 10-point text forbids kidnappings, incitement of hatred, attacks on religious sites and the forcing of members of the other sect from their homes.

It also called for the release from detention of Iraqis not charged with specific crimes. ---
Let's hope all talk about "Islam is a religion of peace" is true. Now its official, a Fatwa is the law: Muslims shall not kill muslims. Lets hope they don't kill anyone else either.

It pertains to other Iraqi's only. Still very hopeful, just not as good as their Holy book mandates.

I doubt seriously that this will have any effect, and if it has, why the heck didn't they do that a year ago ????

The Fatwa will be posted on every mosque in Iraq. It's not just an optimistic wish, it' the law. Those who dare to brake it will answer to Allah himself.

I think they do it now because they finally realize the violence has gone too far.

Actually, that scares me even more.

                    Yes they will.

Since when are fatwas respected by all Muslims?

Chemical Ollie's understanding of fatwas is wrong. Islam has no central religious authority like for example the pope. Any cleric can in theory declare a fatwa. If people will actually listen to it simply depends on the influence of the specific religious leader.

Likewise, if you read some news article that says a fatwe was declared to kill x person, or orders all muslims to wear this kind of garment or something, it doesn't mean that all muslims now agree with this or will do this. Any marginal cleric can issue a fatwa.

Fatwa of peace? I'm sure they must have found some space for some brutal murders in there somewhere

There is one fundamental problem with this fatwa. First of all, this won't be respected in war ridden country. Some people will take this new law seriously, which is good. But others don't, and what that brings about is a situation where fatwas aren't respected. That will bring down the meaning of the law and all laws. It's a lawless country now, so I don't see the point of giving laws that are supposed to be followed.

I would have welcomed a strong appeal and any kind of statement though and I'm not saying this is bad, I'm saying this will have consequences of questioning the validity of peaceful religious leaders, fatwas etc.

In the mind of the fundamentalist, they will only see the laws they want to. THey are following God's wish, therefore they can not be in conflict with the wish, and since that wish is to maim right now, that's what they do.

THey will most likely see this new declaration to be against the 'real' jihad or something, or then they see it like it was the emperor of Japan surrendering because he had to, not necessarily because he wanted to.

So yeah, I think the effect of this will be low, but it will undermine the rule of those who are peaceful and speak against violence in higher up offices.

But let's hope it has validity and meaning in a country that is a mess right now.
