I say **** social control. I'm pro-individual freedom. I'm for letting everyone live their own lives, keep the government out of my life. Screw that. I hired them there to protect my rights. Instead they come up with new rules, restrictions, as to tell me what is acceptable and what is not. We have criminal law for that.

Snotty, the problem with free speech is that people get offended. The problem with being able to go outside your apartment is that you might come across bad people who beat you up.

I could just reply with the previous post.

First of all, you can't do that as in it's impossible to go for censorship that far and wide.

Then you have a problem of what else needs to be taken out and enforced.

Then you have the problem of making a rule that is impossible to enforce.

Then you have a problem of forbidding stuff, which makes it open for anyone else to demand new restrictions.

And then it implies that someone is actually a big authority over the net.

And that will lead to bigger control, because the rest of the interest groups will get in on it as well.

And then you have corporate interests coming down as well.

In the process we will lose more freedoms, privacy, and all this because of few w@ankers?

I don't think so. Neither am I, but few people getting beat up is a ridiculous way of starting any action of censorship.

I explained multiple reasons why it is a bad idea, just for starters.

You can't draw the line anywhere with this. Kiddie porn is still criminal to be holding on your computer, so that's a crime. Holding violent videos is not. Doing that violence is, however, illegal.

Where do you draw the line? Rodney King beatings can't be shown? What about the media, can media shwo violence? Or is this only chavs, and how do you define that in legal terms?

ANd when you start censorshipping, they just move those videos to foreign servers. Then what? You want to impose your censorship globally, because few people got beat up in there? I don't think so.

What about P2P? Few websites down isn't going to stop anything.

What about how the videos get shared via phones these days, that was the topic once. How do you plan to combat that?

All I know about rodney king I learnt from wikipedia, but if the police had filmed the beating and then posted the film so they could boast about it on the internet then I should imagine thats probably crossed the line.

If you can force happy slapping back onto mobile phones and out of the mainstream then the law will have acheived the first step of what I think it was trying to do - stop providing easy access to the video outside of the thugs social circle

Pekka's best point was saying that one person should have the right to conduct their life, as long as it doesn't interfere with another person's same right to live their life.

It's when a person puts their rights above all other's rights that problems develop.

Doesn't posting pictures of yourself committing a crime sort of make it easier for the police to find you and get a conviction. I'd say that it should be OK to post those videos provided that the posters give equal time to videos of the offenders being sentenced in court. To compete with the sensationalism of the videos of beatings though the UK should increase the criminal penalty given for the crime. Perhaps a mandatory 10 years of hard labor would do.
