the five days after Churchill took over as PM, when the War Cabinet debated whether to accept a proposal to negotiate with/through Mussolini. How Chamberlain broke with Halifax and supported Churchill, and Churchill maneuevered to use his support in the full cabinet to counter opposition in the war cabinet. Note this was before Dunkirk, when it wasnt clear any BEF forces would get out, and things looked very dark indeed. Also a general picture of UK during those five days. Highly detailed, extensive use made of war cabinet records.

Author thinks that if Churchill had been less skillful, negotiations might have started, and at best this would have hurt morale badly, and possibly made an armistice inevitable.
