        My main issue is this:

I look at results that are wrong or don't look right. I then assume that it is my code, and spend a long time breaking, fixing, and rebreaking it. Then it turns out to be that I am not making the proper cuts on my data.

I didn't use to comment, now I do (although I am told that my comments could be better).

If you don't comment you will make it hell for whoever needs to look at your code in the future.

Lack of commenting = job security

Commenting is for people like me, who can't remember how their own code works.

Haven't used Fortran in nearly 30 years and with good reason. My sympathies.
"And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man." -- JFK Inaugural, 1961
"Extremism in the defense of liberty is not a vice." -- Barry Goldwater, 1964 GOP Nomination acceptance speech (not George W. Bush 40 years later...)

                            **** that.

                            a) I'm a physicist, not a software engineer or anything. My knowledge of coding comes from doing. I've never taken a class to teach me anything.

                            b) I'm not involved in any data pipelines. Wasting time making my code more readable is useless, since I'm the only one who reads it.

In particle/nuclear physics often other people use your code, as it can be used for decades if it provides sufficient insight (well modified).

This might be different in theoretical realms.. (Plasma, Nuclear, and Condensed Matter all can have a fair bit of programming)
