  • HEEEEEEEEEEELP!!! My computer won't reboot or restart!

I have windows XP pro. I had to reformatt recently..... as in, today.

Now when I try to reboot or just shut down, it gets to the last window where it would normally power off and just hangs there. It never plays the windows shut off sound either.

I am completley out of ideas and can't find any help via google.

    Any ideas anyone?

    HELP!

      Thanks. Really.

Anyone have an actual solution which won't fry my motherboard in a week?

IIRC I had something similar quite a long time ago, I got it solved making sure there were no USB devices attached while booting up or down. Eventually the problem resolved itself, though I have no idea as to why (some patch/driver may have fixed it).

Happens to keyboard from time to time too, when I can't lock the numpad and thus can't enter my password to enter windows, after a restart I can...no idea why it happens, it just does.

Are you sure it hangs, or does it just take very, very long?

Do you have nVidia gfx-card, btw?

I had something like this, taking way too long to boot up, when I had a phone-to-usb cord connected to a USB-router, or what you call those. When connected directly, no problem.

                    1) Pull the plug
                    2) Start in Safe Mode (it will probably do that anyway due to the fact that you didn´t shut it down properly)
                    3) Shut it down.

Now one of two things will happen. Either it will shut down properly or it will be the same fault over again. If it shuts down there´s something wrong with one (or several) of the drivers installed. Try to do a system restore or reinstall the drivers for your graphics card and whatnot. If that doesn´t work your only option is reinstalling XP (unless you want to spend several hours tracking down the problem).

If it doesn´t shut down properly, the system is fubar and you have to reinstall XP.

                    Good luck!

Upgrade your drivers Ves...this sounds like it could remedy the problem...

BTW, have you installed any new drivers on your system prior to this?

IIRC there was a patch in windows update that fixed this problem.
