Germany has Nukes lent to it by the US of A, which is totally NOT in violation of the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty and absolutely may not be used in any discussion of the threat of Iran's impending acquisition of nuclear weapons, a crisis which has been urgent and imminent for the past 15 years!

One could argue that (Aircraft) Jet Engines were actually delayed by the Second World War.

How so? Most (all?) belligerents heavily invested in the technology...

In peacetime, the technology would not necessarily have been such closely guarded state secret. Collaboration between civilian programs would have been more likely to occur. Look at the development of prop planes during the interwar period. The technology has pushed to the max. Almost every year at air shows, speed records were being broken.

Hitler's meddling set back German development, IMO. Specifically, I'm thinking of the ME262.

I'm not saying I think jet engine technology would have advanced much faster without the war. But I can understand the argument that perhaps it could have.

Also, odd for me to be more on the side of private entities being more efficient than government driven development/central planning.

That development could have easily been driven just as heavily by demand for more efficient passenger transports versus higher capacity bombers with longer range.

There's no real correct answer as this is merely speculation.

But even in peacetime the technologies behind the various propeller engines was pretty much trade secret of their respective companies, there was very little (if any, none that I'm aware of, at least, hell, Henschel kept their own prototype a secret from even the german military rom '37 til '39 IIRC) collaboration, and without the pressing urge to get the better fighter, development on such dangerous and unproven technologies would have gone a bit slower IMHO.

I also agree that without a pressing need that the dangers would have translated into longer development for safety's sake.
Not that businesses have ever sacrificed safety where profits are concerned.
