  • Questions about the XBox 360

I am going to buy a 360, but have a couple of questions for anybody here who has one.

I will be buying a VGA A/V cable and probably an HD-DVD add-on drive sometime in the future. Given this, is it a good idea to get only the basic $300 console?

    (1) The HD-DVD bundles a remote, so that would be duplicative with the $400 console version. I can live without a remote until I buy the HD-DVD.

    (2) The hard drive sounds like it's not a good deal, so are there memory alternatives that are feasible? For instance, would my 1 GB USB memory stick work instead?

    (3) The wireless controller isn't that important to me, so I can live without it.

    (4) Can I use my digital USB headset instead of the branded 360 headset?

    Thanks!

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. The remote that comes with (or came with, I thought it was a limited-time launch thing) a smaller remote. The HD-DVD remote is the $40 universal remote accessory. May as well wait, you can use the Xbox controller as a remote.[/q]

No, memory sticks/USB sticks don't work for storage. You'll need an Xbox 360 memory unit or a harddrive for saved games. Therein lies the rub -- memory units aren't that cheap anyway and suffice for simple game saves, but a harddrive is strongly recommended. It improves loading times in many games (it's a fast cache compared to disc), it permits content downloads (demos, videos, etc), and it's far larger.

    (4) Can I use my digital USB headset instead of the branded 360 headset?

No. The Xbox 360 headsets connect via a special port in the controller, USB headsets don't work the same way.

All told, you're best off with the $399 version.

That's what I thought. Thanks for the rundown.

To be honest, it's getting a little spendy, even compared to the PS3.

Xbox 360 is the front runner for my best personal purchase of the year, despite the cost.

Right, you can get good deals with that console right now. I bought mine, it was like.. under 400... it was the deluxe package too. Wireless remote control, headset, all the cables and butt plugs. Cool stuff. PLUS I got the xbox minifridge too for free on top of that, value ~100... cool as well. TOtally worth the money. At least it will be when I mod that baby to play everything I want.

Aaanyway... it's a good buy, definitely yeah. No one should wait wii, no one should buy the upcoming PS3... everyone should go with xbox 360 and I truly mean it. It's a good deal for the money. I mean sure it's still expensive but comparing to ... PS3... man, it's a bargain and it will carry further too.
