  • ROVE Pressured Foley Into Staying In Congress

And before our right wing posters can attack the source realize this is straight out of the New Republic which is a far right wing magazine. The Republican leadership knew all about Folley's diddling of little boys but decided to try to cover it up because they didn't want to lose his seat in Congress. This isn't just shameful, it is evil. It shows the Republican Party has no principles at all other then maintaining power.

    OW ROVE TWISTED FOLEY'S ARM:

It seems increasingly clear that the GOP congressional leadership, eager for every safe incumbent in the House to run for re-election, looked the other way as evidence accumulated that Mark Foley had a thing for pages. Holding onto his seat became more important than confronting him over his extracurricular activities.

But there's more to the story of why Foley stood for re-election this year. Yesterday, a source close to Foley explained to THE NEW REPUBLIC that in early 2006 the congressman had all but decided to retire from the House and set up shop on K Street. "Mark's a friend of mine," says this source. "He told me, 'I'm thinking about getting out of it and becoming a lobbyist.'"

But when Foley's friend saw the Congressman again this spring, something had changed. To the source's surprise, Foley told him he would indeed be standing for re-election. What happened? Karl Rove intervened.

According to the source, Foley said he was being pressured by "the White House and Rove gang," who insisted that Foley run. If he didn't, Foley was told, it might impact his lobbying career.

"He said, 'The White House made it very clear I have to run,'" explains Foley's friend, adding that Foley told him that the White House promised that if Foley served for two more years it would "enhance his success" as a lobbyist. "I said, 'I thought you wanted out of this?' And he said, 'I do, but they're scared of losing the House and the thought of two years of Congressional hearings, so I have two more years of duty.'"

The White House declined a request for comment on the matter, but obviously the plan hasn't worked out quite as Rove hoped it would.

Michael Kinsley certainly would have a chuckle upon learning that The New Republic is a far right wing magazine.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

      Here's a recent quote from TNR's editor...

On June 23, 2006, editor Martin Peretz, in response to criticism of TNR from the blog Daily Kos, wrote the following as a summary of TNR's stances on recent issues, "The New Republic is very much against the Bush tax programs, against Bush Social Security 'reform,' against cutting the inheritance tax, for radical health care changes, passionate about Gore-type environmentalism, for a woman's entitlement to an abortion, for gay marriage, for an increase in the minimum wage, for pursuing aggressively alternatives to our present reliance on oil and our present tax preferences for gas-guzzling automobiles. We were against the confirmation of Justice Alito."
      Yep, far right wing.

Far right makes me think he was indeed thinking of the Freepers. But I actually think he's just too stupid to keep The Weekly Standard and The New Republic straight.

Regardless of self pwnage (which for the record is a hoot). Rove and Co. asking Foley to stay on to hold a Repug majority in the house is the same as Rove knowing Foley was a card carrying member of NAMBLA?

Domestically, the current version of TNR supports policies first associated with the Democratic Leadership Council and "New Democrats" like former President Bill Clinton and Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman, who received the magazine's endorsement in the 2004 Democratic primary.
