  • Shivering Alaskans to Hugo Chavez: Keep your oil

    http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/10/09/ala....ap/index.html

"As a citizen of this country, you can have your own opinion of our president and our country. But I don't want a foreigner coming in here and bashing us," said Justine Gunderson, administrator for the tribal council in the Aleut village of Nelson Lagoon. "Even though we're in economically dire straits, it was the right choice to make."

These people are salmon fishers whose livelyhood has been hit hard by competition from big business.. They pay $300/month for heating oil..

I dont like Bush, but I dont want foreigners coming in here and bashing him either.. I admire the patriotism of these villagers in denying free heating oil from Chavez that they desperately need.

I wrote to them to ask if I could send a donation to help them defray the cost of oil. I have included their response below. I have sent money and I hope you will too.

Thank you so much for your comments and support of our decision not to accept the CITGO fuel donation. An account has been set up through Key Bank titled

While I understand the point, we (as in the US) has said a bad precedent for criticizing other country's internal policies. We do it all the time. It seems a bit wierd that we get all offended when someone does it to us (especially since the US has criticized the internal affairs of Venezuela!!).

Criminey. But I know what you mean. All the burning of Venzuelan flags and effigies in our town squares is totally out of control.

300 for heating oil doesn't sound like an out of whack cost in a cold place . You folks do realize where these folks are and I can only imagine how expensive it is to ship stuff there

Here's what wiki has to say

The Pribilof Islands (often called the Fur Seal Islands, Russian: Kotovi) are a group of four volcanic islands, part of Alaska, lying in the Bering Sea, about 200 miles north of Unalaska and 200 miles south of Cape Newenham, the nearest point on the North American mainland. The Siberian coast is roughly 500 miles away. About 200 sq km in total area, they are mostly rocky, covered with meadow and tundra, and support a human population of 684 (2000 census), concentrated in the towns of St. Paul and St. George, each on an island of the same name.
So people on tiny remote islands off the coast of ALASKA find that their heating oil is expensive. I for one am shocked.

OH and remember these folks are Alaskan's so

Alaska Governor Frank Murkowski announced this evening the amount of this year's Permanent Fund Dividend. This year, every Alaskan who qualifies for the dividend can expect to receive $1,106.96.
So the state is sending them money-- Its actually about 300 more than last year so that should pay for one month's heat.

Perhaps but its also just stupid grandstanding by Chavez to be offering oil to Americans to highlight some group that isn't well off.

The US and other nations have poor people and if poor people live in the north, heating will be a big expense.

                      Volcanic islands?

So why don´t they use geothermal energy for heating?

A good question. Perhaps they cannot afford the required initial investments.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Seriously, what's up with all these foreigners exercising their rights of free speech

If they're too good for Chavez's cheap oil, I'm certainly not going to help them, heh.
