Growing up in the 50's,60's & 70's in Maine rain/snow is not quite sleet. Sleet is more frozen rain almost snow. rainsnow is where the cold temp is cold enough aloft to create snow but warmer nearer ground thus causing more rain to mix in, cauing most times slush

Buffalo area received 14 inches of the white crap last night!

                Earliest blizzard on record!

Buffalo (WSYR-TV) -- State Police have closed the New York State Thruway from Exit 46 (Interstate 390) in Rochester all the way to Exit 59 in Fredonia. They report dozens of jackknifed trucks, crashes and disabled vehicles along the highway, due to an early season snowstorm.

Mark Lohr of Phoenix happened to be on the Thruway when the weather got bad. On the phone during The Morning News, he told NewsChannel 9 that "the Thruway is literally a parking lot," and all drivers can do is continually clear snow off their vehicles while they wait for the road to re-open.

According to the National Weather Service, an October record-high 8.3 inches of snow fell at the Buffalo-Niagara International Airport between yesterday afternoon and midnight Friday. As of 3:30AM, the latest snow total report, a total of 14 inches had fallen there, and forecasters expect it to continue through the middle of the morning.

In addition to the snowfall, much of western New York is dealing with power outages. Buffalo Public Works Commissioner Joe Giambra says many trees still have their leaves, allowing them to collect more snow, and the weight caused many branches to snap, taking down power lines and blocking streets.

National Grid says more than 220,000 customers are without power. Spokesman Steve Brady told the Associated Press, "It's still snowing. This is extremely heavy snow and most of the trees still have most of their leaves ... we can't do a complete damage assessment until the snow stops falling." Brady says National Grid has 50 crews already working on repairs, and another 100 crews are on their way into western New York from other areas. However, he says many customers may be without power for the entire weekend.

Unnecessary driving was banned in Buffalo, and several suburbs. "We have a condition where 80 percent of the roads are impassable," said Lt. Stephen McGonagle of the Amherst Police Department. Dozens of schools are closed today.

According to the State Police, States of Emergency are in effect for Buffalo, Tonawanda, North Tonawanda, Akron and Elma. There is no unnecessary travel permitted in Buffalo, Tonawanda, Amherst or West Seneca. A complete driving ban is in effect in Lackawanna and Amherst.

13c (55F) here. Nice and foggy start.

Some single-figure maxima next week, not often we get that in October. Pennines and Scottish peaks should get some snow.

We were supposed to get flurries here in Chicago. Instead, we got our earliest measurable snowfall on record and came within one degree of record cold for Oct. 12...

TGIAB (Thank God It Ain't Buffalo)

We ended up with just over an inch. It "warmed up" to 40F later in the day, so most of it is gone now. But this is normally still prime golfing season.

Incredible. Autumn gets later every year doesn't it.. Have we hit a tipping point to a new period of cooling?
