  • Iraqi military was planning a coup?

Huh? Tuned into the NBC news tonight and just caught the end of a report saying there were meetings within the Iraqi military planning to take down the government, but it had been stopped and Baghdad was in lockdown over the weekend. Missed the beginning, though, and it isn't on MSNBC yet...anybody know what's going on?

Doesn't sound realistic while the US is still there

Iraq declared a curfew on Saturday in the capital Baghdad, ordering all cars off the streets and telling people to remain in their homes.

A statement from Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's office said the curfew would remain in force until 6:00 a.m. (0200 GMT) on Sunday. It gave no reason for the measure.

The stories I'm finding are all saying that nobody's giving out a reason...NBC said otherwise. :/

Unless the U.S. is involved or has given tacit permission.

In other news, Muqtada al-Sadr has lost control of his militia. It's gone rogue on him.

In more news, 61% of Iraqis approve of attacks on coalition forces.

In even more news, there an attack on Coalition forces every 15 minutes.

It's time to face facts. We've lost.

Ok, they got the netcast up so I could finally see what I thought I heard. The Iraqi deputy PM said he has evidence that the Iraqi military had been planning a coup and there had been meetings in Jordan, Beirut, and Baghdad to take down the government, but it didn't get beyond the planning stage before it was disrupted. It was mentioned in the same piece as the story on the curfew, but hearing the entire piece it didn't sound like the two were necessarily related.

From BBC: "The spokesman did not reveal why a curfew was being put in place, but sectarian violence and blasts have been increasing in recent days."

Later "On Wednesday a US military spokesman said that there had been a spike in violence coinciding with the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which began on Monday, and that suicide attacks were at record levels."
