  • Bin Laden Offered to Bush by Taliban

The Bush administration sent Mohabbat (Taliban contact) back, carrying kindred tidings of delay and regret to the Taliban three more times in 2001, the last in September after the 9/11 attack. Each time he was asked to communicate similar regrets about the failure to act on the plan agreed to in Frankfurt. This procrastination became a standing joke with the Taliban, Mohabbat tells CounterPunch "They made an offer to me that if the US didn't have fuel for the Cruise missiles to attack Osama in Daronta, where he was under house arrest, they would pay for it."

Kabir Mohabbat's final trip to Afghanistan on the US government payroll took place on September 3, 2001. On September 11 Mohabbat acted as translator for some of the Taliban leadership in Kabul as they watched tv coverage of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Four days later the US State Department asked Mohabbat to set up a meeting with the Taliban. Mohabbat says the Taliban were flown to Quetta in two C-130s. There they agreed to the three demands sought by the US team: 1. Immediate handover of bin Laden; 2. Extradition of foreigners in Al Qaeda who were wanted in their home countries; 3. shut-down of bin Laden's bases and training camps. Mohabbat says the Taliban agreed to all three demands.

This meeting in Quetta was reported in carefully vague terms by Pizzey on September 25, where Mohabbat was mentioned by name. He tells us that the Bush administration was far more exercised by this story than by any other event in the whole delayed and ultimately abandoned schedule of killing Osama.

there's more, tonight Olberman ran a clip of some Arab or Afghan dude asking Ari Fleischer in Feb 2001 if the Bush adm would take bin Laden from the Taliban and Ari said he'd get back to him on that, unfortunatley OBL got to us before the Bushies got back to the Taliban on that matter.

No, "they" - the Taliban - set up a deal with Clinton to hand him over to the Bushies. Some guy with an accent asked Fleischer in Feb 2001 about the existing deal negotiated under Clinton. I dont know who the guy was but his question was specific to this deal and why the Bushies were slow to accept delivery of bin Laden.

I am unclear why the Taliban would so soundl deny to turn him over to the US in the wake of 9/11 if this is the case. Why would they let them be thrown from power over this if they had already agreed to it?

          Something doesn't seem right here.

It also seems that Clinton would be screaming about him negotiating bin Ladens capture and Bush letting it slip away if this was the case.

          Just doesn't make sense

Does the name Dana Rohrabacher ring any bells here?

Well, but unless we get more hard info we can just believe him or not. Just because one guy says something that contradicts the official version doesn't make him per se any more right than the version he challenges. That's the prob with most of these stories.

Who is Kabir Mohabbat, what is his agenda, and why should we believe him?

Why don't you blame Reagan, Berz?

If anyone puts this all on Bush, they're...well, incorrect, and I'll leave it at that.

I've seen this elsewhere today, but I don't remember where. Counterpunch has been a lot more careful since they got goosed on the Palestinian/CNN video cockup. If its Kockburn himself, you can be sure he's got solid sources.
