MADRID, Spain (AP) - A Spanish university professor with a long beard and dark complexion said Thursday he was briefly forced off an airliner during a layover on the Spanish island of Mallorca by passengers who feared he was an Islamic terrorist.

Pablo Gutierrez Vega told The Associated Press that he was humiliated when three German passengers on an Air Berlin flight approached him during a layover in Palma de Mallorca on Aug. 30 en route from Seville, Spain, to Dortmund, Germany, and asked to search his carry-on luggage.

The men told him that other passengers were frightened by his appearance, said Gutierrez Vega, 35, a law professor at the University of Seville.

"They treated me like an Islamic terrorist because of my appearance," Gutierrez Vega said, according to an account posted Thursday on the website of the newspaper El Pais.

The airline confirmed the incident to the AP and called it regretful.

"I acknowledged that we contributed to this man going through something very unpleasant," said Air Berlin's managing director for Spain and Portugal, Alvaro Middelmann.

After realizing the men were not undercover police officers, Gutierrez Vega refused to hand over his luggage. The pilot then approached the group and led the professor to the runway so they could speak in private.

"The pilot said the passengers believed I was a Muslim," Gutierrez Vega told the AP.

On the runway, the pilot apologized for the incident and said he was willing to expel the passengers who confronted him and continue the flight with Gutierrez Vega on board. The pilot also said he could take Gutierrez Vega's luggage into the cockpit to pacify the other passengers.

Gutierrez Vega said he decided to get back on the plane and store his luggage in the cockpit "because I didn't want to cause any problems."

The pilot, however, erred by not ejecting the passengers who confronted him, Middelmann said.

Gutierrez Vega has hired a lawyer to initiate legal proceedings against Air Berlin.

          It's already happened over here:

A flight from Malaga to Manchester was delayed this weekend because passengers refused to travel with people they regarded as behaving suspiciously.

Two men, described as wearing heavy clothes and speaking a language claimed to be Arabic, were removed from the flight - but were later cleared to travel, without any suggestion of wrongdoing.

A passenger on the flight, Heath Schofield, explained the suspicions: "It was a return holiday flight, full of people in flip-flops and shorts. There were just two people in the whole crowd who looked like they didn't belong there."

          I like this:

How did not wearing flip-flops become a danger sign?

I'll bear that in mind for future reference. Of course winter may make it slightly more difficult to spot potential jihadist bombers, and winter sports destinations may have to be on special alert all year round now.

And some additional info for Krazyhorse from the same site :

I am British of mixed Asian descent, now living in Canada. Being a commercial photographer I sometimes have to travel by air in the US and Canada.

On several occasions I have had staff and passengers watch me very suspiciously while I wait reading or drinking coffee, etc. My honest opinion is that these amateur sleuths are just closet racists.

I feel it is my duty to retain my dignity and rise above this pettiness. If all the brown people in the western World become targets for petty harrassment the problems of alienation will just grow. Obviously as an ex-Londoner I too look for strange behaviour, but if a brown skinned person is just sitting there calmly minding his or her business please leave them alone.

At least the 'racist' Germans only forced the man off a plane. In Canada it appears, looking like a terrorist can have much more serious consequences:

Federal Police Chief Apologizes to Deportee
          From Times Wire Reports

          September 29, 2006

The head of Canada's federal police force offered an unprecedented public apology to a man who was deported by U.S. agents to Syria after the Mounties mistakenly labeled him an Islamic extremist.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Commissioner Giuliano Zaccardelli admitted that his force had mishandled the case of Maher Arar, whom he described as an innocent man swept up in a search for terrorism suspects in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Arar, a 36-year-old Ottawa software engineer, says he was repeatedly tortured during the year he spent in Syrian jails.
