Islam actually allows people to skip the religious stuff like Ramadan if they are in jihad.
So, for one month out of every year, you can only eat during daylight if you're currently killing unbelievers? That sounds like a powerful incentive to me. The more I learn about this Muhammad fellow the more clever he appears...
Resolution 678 passed by the UN was what gave the United States (and the Coalition) authority to go into Kuwait to kick Iraq out. Basically the US was acting under UN sanction and the Coalition was a United Nations Coalition. That means any peace or cease fire was done under the auspicies of the UN. Which means only the UN could decide if the cease fire was actually violated.
That means, contrary to your second post, that the UN WAS the opposing combatant because the Coalition was acting under UN mandate under Resolution 678, authorizing any means necessary to get Iraq out of Kuwait.
If you will look at the combatants on the right hand bar it lists "UN Coalition" and "Republic of Iraq".
Thats not my read on the matter. Unlike the Korean conflict where UN troops were in the field under UN flag and UN commanders (Of which the US led) that was not the case here. And yes I followed up and UN resolution 678 authorized additional actions it was simply a green light for member nations to do what they felt best. It was not a UN run operation. Sorry the UN was not at war. Member states were. A clear distinction.

Nope, when the US went to the Security Council they were authorizing a UN action against Iraq. The coalition was a UN coalition. The US and other members of the coalition were acting on behalf of the UN. That means the UN was at war, not simply a bunch of individual member states.
Getting approval from the UN makes it into a UN operation. It means the UN allows certain member states to act on its behalf. That's the point of Article 42 of the UN Charter through which force is authorized (which the power to make Resolution 678 comes from). Otherwise, what is the point? You go to the UN, not so everyone feels chipper, but to be able to represent the UN in your mission, showing that the international community is behind what is going to be done. Don't tell me that if the UN approved the current Iraq war, Bush wouldn't be referring to it as the 'UN mission' when faced by critics (as it would add a great amount of international credibility).
Somalia was a UN operation and the Gulf War was a UN operation since the US went through the UN to authorize the use of force.
The Gulf War serves as an excellent example of the capabilities of the United Nations to gather its resources and collectively wage war to deter aggression against a belligerent nation.

U.N. sanctioned restrictions on Iraq, and were petitioned to rescind, which was done. Since U.S. aircraft were fired on, the U.S. went to rescue Hussein from the terrorist Kurds and other.

Well, your read is wrong.
That the troops were not under UN flag or command is irrelevant to the legal framework underwriting the war.
