The claim was there was no Al Qaeda opporating in Iraq prior to the invasion. Of course they are there now; even the Administration has said they've made terrorism worse by invading Iraq though they're doing there best to squirm out of it.

I don't beleive any of the coalition forces ceded their rights to end ceasefire and commit to a lasting state of peace until such time as resolutions were met and since not one was.........
Resolution 678 passed by the UN was what gave the United States (and the Coalition) authority to go into Kuwait to kick Iraq out. Basically the US was acting under UN sanction and the Coalition was a United Nations Coalition. That means any peace or cease fire was done under the auspicies of the UN. Which means only the UN could decide if the cease fire was actually violated.

That means, contrary to your second post, that the UN WAS the opposing combatant because the Coalition was acting under UN mandate under Resolution 678, authorizing any means necessary to get Iraq out of Kuwait.

I realize Wiki isn't the best of sources, but:

If you will look at the combatants on the right hand bar it lists "UN Coalition" and "Republic of Iraq".

And Sloww, as for violating a cease fire... that was with the United Nations and as such only the UN should be able to enforce a breach of the treaty. If North Korea violates the cease fire with South Korea, should Iran be able to enforce it and invade North Korea?

Might want to read the rest of the released NIE before you go harping this point.

They are getting plenty to replace them as well, as many reports are begining to point out (something that was quite obvious however).

You mean the armistace agreement signed by the members of the UNITED NATIONS coalition, who were waging a war authorized by the United Nations and under the United Nations?

It was a UN war and thus the cease fire is under UN purview. Not a member of the UN.

Sorry, but you can't use the UN to get greater international approval and then claim that any cease fires were directly with you and not with the UN, under whose auspicies you were fighting under.

Will the scientists be allowed to martyr themselves also? If not they're getting the raw end of the deal because they get distinctly fewer virgins. It's obvious then that AQ will have to offer to the scientistys the honor of delivering their little monstrosities so that they may achieve martyrdom. Eventually the middle east will cease to have a scientific community. Smooth move.

How much does jihad pay? Is it competative with the wages they would be able to pull down in other jobs less likely to result in thier death?

They view it as a benefit of the profession.

The leaders like it because there's no C.O.L.A. involved, no retirement payments, nothing.

As I recall, the Jihadis in Afghanistan get paid about 2x/3x as much as the Afghani soldiers. This was before the recent slaughter of Taliban troops, so maybe the labor market has seen some adjustment since then.

I don't know about Iraq. Maybe they can double-dip as gov't soldiers and jihadis. There are some indications that this is happening, especially among Sadr's folks. So you would have to look at the marginal value of an hour versus risk, f.e.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
