When we captured enemy troops on the field of battle in past wars, they werent extended habeus corpus. We could just go ahead and issues a formal DOW, and call them EPW's, except that then we wouldnt be able to interrogate them, etc.

A formal combatant is covered by international conventionans, and are held only until the end of the conflict, at which time, unless they are accused of war crimes, they are released. Until they are released they can't be tortured and are afforded various rights. Your comparison is therefore useless.

This to me only reemphasizes the importance of a change in the executive in 2008 - to a Dem, or a Republican whose been independent of the admin. So that someone else will have to deal with the difficult security issues facing us, which are REAL, not fearmongering.

What is the point of a change is people like you vote to allow for hearsay evidence and giving people a pass on torture??

The Dem's will almost certainly take the House. They might take the Senate, depending in which camp Leiberman decides to play. He's a selfish-vindictive bastard, so I could see him joining the GOP if the price were right.

At this point, I doubt the Democrats can take either house, given how utterly ineffectual they are. My guess is that turnout will be low this election cycle, and the Republicans have a better get out the vote organization nowadays.
