  • English (United States)

Am I the only UK person, or non US english speaker who finds it extremely annoying to have software installers that ask what language you want, and to be presented with that as the only English language option? I laugh and find other nationalistic arguments silly but this really gets my goat for some reason.

Would it really cause so many problems for it to just say "English"?

I agree. US English is the world standard anyway, so people should be smart enough to know that a general "English" setting really means "US English".

Bloody Queen's English is the standard, boy! You best remember it!

Not that I care... But I quess there are differences. Like colour vs color, tomato vs... tomato.

guess I should've put up a no american opinions wanted disclaimer

You'd have to be english to really understand. But it's annoying, trust me!

And sloww, what's with the Q in guess?

Edit: And I really don't mind the spelling differences, there aren't even that many, it's not like it makes it any more difficult to understand, it's just having to accept English (United States) as my only option when installing something really annoys me, like English English is inferior when it's the original grr.

It is inferior now that America is the center of the English-speaking world. That's how these things work; originality has nothing to do with it...

Even in the United States, English spelling and word choice is often considered to be more "refined" and "sophisticated"

As well, in many other areas of the English speaking world, English English is the preferred English, not American English.

                      By who?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

lol ... you're being feisty lately DanS

I think he's suggesting that the "upper class" consider british english more "classy"; to a large extent it's a combination of the pretentious yearning for a europe of yore of aristocracy and nobility; and the "Pierce Brosnan" effect, in that British accents are different and thus considered by some "better" (sexier, more genteel, etc.) because of this difference.

Most people consider british pronunciation just ****y, especially those of us who've met real british people who don't make £400,000 a year ...

But I'd be all for replacing it with generic "english". They're not going to put two different ones in there because of the cost-benefit (british translators are expensive ) so just go with generic
