It took having a stint put in my heart, but after 27 years of a pack a day, I am smoke free since March.

I'm asthmatic and never saw the slightest point in it. It doesn't DO anything for you afaik, except allow you to look cool to somebody by inhaling and exhaling hot vapors. Oh, and it raises your heart rate, and calms you down provided you're already addicted. Jeez, at least marijuana gets you high, and it isn't physically addictive. Though I don't do marijuana either. Just plain booze for me, thanks.

I might have a cigar for Christmas. A nice Romeo y Julieta. Sometimes there is no acceptable alternative.

Used to smoke a pack a day for 10 years. Tried to quit once by weaning myself of ciggies, but failed. When I decided to quit cold turkey after finishing my last pack I did just fine. What's kind of interesting is that smoking pot helped me quit cigarettes; when I had the strong desire for the physical sensation of smoking, I just smoked some weed. I was already smoking pot at the time, so I was just stoned more often.

But, the nice thing about weed is that it isn't addicitive at all. Whenever I've stopped smoking pot (drug test, not available, etc.) I have a little trouble getting to sleep the first night, but I'm fine afterwards.

So, if you want to quit cigarettes, smoke pot instead, and then stop smoking pot. Piece o' cake.

Oh, and although I haven't smoked a cigarette in about 7 years (and have no desire to), I still have a cigar once in a blue moon.

                    I don't smoke.

In my experience, I've seen a pretty stark class-based division between young American smokers and non-smokers. I've noticed that for people under 30, upper middle class people are much less likely to smoke than lower middle class or poor people. I come from a poor area, and the majority of people my age who live there smoke. Few of my undergrad and law school classmates smoke, and those who did tended to be European.

Has anyone else noticed a smoking class divide ?

                      quit four months ago...

hysterics about quitting are indeed exagerated

                      gained 7 kg though

When I was around 11-12, I promised myself never to smoke and not drink alcohol before the age of 18. At the age of 20, I've never smoked and I didn't taste alcohol before the age of 18.1 or something. Don't drink much either.

No thank God, I don't have to go through the constant rigmarole of trying to give up...and then there is the cost of the damn things. And something about longevity too...
