  • eBay begins banning Black Metal music...

Not that I listen to black metal, but banning a whole genre because of what a few artists might portray is a total bull**** thing for eBay to do. And to do it just because some disgruntled people whined enough about it because it isn't their idea of good, wholesome music is pathetic pandering.

eBay Banning Sale Of Black Metal Albums? - Sep. 14, 2006
Paula Hogan of MANIC Music & Distribution and Candlelight Records USA has contacted BLABBERMOUTH.NET to report that "eBay is [allegedly] currently starting a ban on black/extreme metal. A few of our vendors who have sizeable eBay stores are now finding their items pulled down by eBay directly. The list we have compiled so far that have been pulled for sale via any eBay stores or auctions is noted below. I'm sure there are more."

Added Dan Ferguson of Indianapolis, IN's Abyss Records: "I had a number of items removed and account suspended by selling black metal. It seems a group of so-called Christians have been reporting black metal bands (even though eBay has black metal as a search genre) as all racist and hateful and discriminatory."

The items that were allegedly removed by eBay because they "violated the eBay Hateful or Discriminatory policy" are as follows:

BURZUM - Complete 6 LP SET
EMPEROR - IX Equilibrium ORIG. LP
    WOTANORDEN - From The.. CD
    BURZUM - s/t / Aske DOUBLE LP
    1349 - Beyond The CD
    DARKTHRONE - Panzerfaust CD
MAYHEM - Collection 4 LP SET
    PANTHEON - Krihapentswor CD
    DARKTHRONE - Total Death CD
    BURZUM - Draugen CD DVD
    BURZUM - Daudi Baldrs LP
    BURZUM - Daudi Baldrs CD
ZYKLON B - Blood Must Be Shed CD
    ARMAGGEDON - Imperium CD
    EMPEROR - Demo LP
    1349 - Hellfire DOUBLE LP
    DARKTHRONE - Hate Them CD
    BURZUM - Filosofem DOUBLE LP
    BURZUM - Hlidskjalf LP
BURZUM - Det Som Engang Var DIGI CD
CAMULOS / AINSHVAL - Split CD
BURZUM - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss LP
BURZUM - Det Som Engang Var LP
    NOKTURNAL MORTUM - Weltanschauung CD
    SATYRICON - Now, Diabolical CD

In eBay's e-mail to Ferguson explaining their decision to remove his listing, they write, "eBay doesn't permit sellers to list items that promote or glorify hatred, violence, or racial intolerance. Items that promote organizations with such views are also prohibited.

"eBay will judiciously disallow listings or items that promote or glorify hatred, violence or racial intolerance, or items that promote organizations (such as Nazis, neo-Nazis and Aryan Nation) with such views. This policy also applies to listings that offer shipping to countries where certain items may be illegal."
Link to Wikipedia article on what Black Metal music is... and isn't:

Black metal is a sub-genre of extreme metal, which started in the early 1980s with bands such as Venom, Bathory, Mercyful Fate, and Celtic Frost. The 2nd wave of black metal started in the later 1980s/early 1990s primarily in Norway, however not limited to Norway. It garnered criticism from mainstream media because black metal supposedly embraces anti-Christianity, misanthropy, nihilism and sometimes racism and nationalism though not all musicians considered black metal necessarily support these ideologies, especially not the latter two (they are almost exclusive to the sub-genre of National Socialist black metal), perhaps because standard black metal ideology is influenced by anti-idealist philosophers who often regarded racism as a form of idealism or philanthropy. More generally, most black metal musicians are strongly anti-collectivist, critics of religion and are advocates of individualism and rational egoism, but Christian black metal and again Nationalist Socialist black metal are an exception to this case.

eBay's a private company. They have a right to decide what to put on their servers.

I listen to black metal. It seems they pulled these things of their site for being hateful, a few of them could have been pulled for being works by racist or antisemtic artistis.

        Christian "black metal".
It's candy. Surely there are more important things the NAACP could be boycotting. If the candy were shaped like a burning cross or a black man made of regular chocolate being dragged behind a truck made of white chocolate I could understand the outrage and would share it. - Drosedars

I didn't realize eBay has such policies. Is it also unpermisable to sell German WW2 antiques/collectables?

                  They shouldn't!

Seriously, eBay are free to shoot themselves in the foot. Indeed, I welcome it.

Ebay disgusts me for doing this. They banned some of the greatest music of the 90's.

                        never heard of these guys.

I don't like the real black metal. I like the fake wannabe black metal like Cradle of Filth.

Celtic Frost black metal? (just read the wiki entry). I don't think so.

That is one band I love (see my avatar). I first heard the album (see my avatar again) on a crappy copy on a cassette tape. Funny how I actually prefer the crappy sound quality of that cassette to cd quality. I grew to love the bad sound version better. I'm the same way with Slayer- south of heaven. I had a bad copy of that as well. I still prefer it over my CD.

                          and christian black metal?

doesn't say much for the 90's music.

Nope, this isn´t forbidden, not even in germany.
In fact there is a special category in german eBay
                              Collecting --> Militaria --> 1918-1945

which has a lot of WW2-Equipment (for example german paratrooper helmets, uniforms of the german Wehrmacht and the like.
The only thing which probably is forbidden would be to sell weapons which are still functional (and perhaps, for eBay germany, to sell things which have the SS-Insignia on them).
