SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California filed a global warming lawsuit on Wednesday against Ford Motor Co., General Motors Corp., Toyota Motor Corp. and three other automakers, charging that greenhouse gases from their vehicles have cost the state millions of dollars.

State Attorney General Bill Lockyer said the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Northern California was the first of its kind to seek to hold manufacturers liable for the damages caused by their vehicles' emissions.

The lawsuit also names Chrysler Motors Corp., the U.S. arm of Germany's DaimlerChrysler AG, and the North American units of Japan's Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. Ltd..

The lawsuit charges that vehicle emissions have contributed significantly to global warming and harmed the resources, infrastructure and environmental health of the most populous state in the United States.

Ford deferred comment to the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, an industry group which could not immediately be reached. The other automakers had no immediate comment.

Lockyer, a Democrat, said the complaint states that under federal and state common law the automakers have created a public nuisance by producing "millions of vehicles that collectively emit massive quantities of carbon dioxide."

Carbon dioxide emissions and other greenhouse gases have been linked to global warming.

The lawsuit comes after California passed legislation supported by Republican Gov.
Arnold Schwarzenegger that requires the state to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by 25 percent by 2020. California was the first state to mandate a reduction of greenhouse gases.

California has also issued rules to force automakers to cut tailpipe emissions from cars and trucks. Enforcement of those rules is being delayed by litigation from automakers.

If they win this case, isn't the next targets those who dares to drive those damn thingies or will they sue the carmakers ?

Guess the power companies that doesn't use nuclear power are also potential targets.

Why doesn't he sue the State of California for allowing these cars to be used?

Do they only have cars from those companies in California, or what about the others? Seems completely arbitrary....

Yeah, this lawsuit contradicts the "guns doesn't kill people" statement a little

I wonder if California state attorney general elections are coming up.

Well, you aren't allowed to sue yourself in the US .

THis just sounds silly-- Should the automakers now countersue the state for creating all the roads which led to . . . I don't know excessive driving. How about the feds for failing to keep the borders tight and allowing too many people to immigrate to Southern Cal. lets not forget the oil companies cause they make the stuff and while we are at it we should sue each and every individual that ever owned or drove a car.

Perhaps we could sue Hollywood studios or Nascar or someone for making driving seem glamorous

I disagree-- to me taxes ARE the proper way to address government needs related to certain common activities. So I have no problem with gas taxes for building roads or even as an instrument of public policy to try to influence driving habits.

While generally I like lower taxes, I do see a place for taxes directed at specific types of consumption if such consumption causes certain governmental costs.
