MONTREAL (CP) — A blind former contestant on Quebec's version of Canadian Idol pleaded guilty Wednesday to trying to kill her visually impaired boyfriend in a bizarre hotel-room ritual in January.
Audrey Trepanier, 21 (seen here in an audition video) is free on bail and living with her parents until sentencing arguments Feb. 8.
The aspiring singer, who performed last year on Star Academie, had tried to rekindle her relationship with Remy Chartier, 23, and called him in Vancouver to say she was pregnant.
He fell for the ruse, flew to Montreal Jan. 7 and checked into a hotel.
At the hotel, Trepanier urged Chartier to participate in an aboriginal ritual for their baby that involved him stripping to his trousers and donning a blindfold.
She fixed him a cocktail containing about 19 different pills, Crown prosecutor Nancy Potvin said, then put a knife to his throat.
The two fought, and Chartier ended up with superficial wounds on his body, before calling 911 after stumbling into the hotel lobby, wearing only his pants.
Potvin said Trepanier, who wasn't pregnant, had prepared a tape recounting her plan to kill Chartier, and also wore a bracelet which said: "I killed Remy."
A charge of administering a noxious substance for the purpose of committing a crime was dropped Wednesday.
Defence lawyer Robert La Haye said his client, who first met Chartier in 2001 at a summer camp for the visually impaired, is getting psychiatric help.
She's had a difficult time getting over the break-up, but isn't a danger to society, he said.
"We're not talking about street gangs or a settling of accounts here," he said in an interview outside the courthouse.
"She has no previous record, she has a lot of support and knows she now has to face the music."
