  • 40 years Star Trek

    ....and nobody seems to care.

Actually "birthday" was on Sep 8 as this article says http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14720731/
(I don't want to paste it here, it doesn't say anything breathtaking)

I admit after watching new BSG watching Star Trek re-runs loses lots of appeal - if you haven't given up on it already before. Although I still would prefer it to something like SG....

Do you think ST can have a come back that is worth watching?
I don't even know if they are planning new stuff, if tv or movie....

I'm not saying nobody cares about your thread. But most people don't care anymore about Star Trek. It ran out of steam decades ago.

Not after they've given it a rest for a considerable amount of time (like last time). And even then they need to seriously change the format, a la BSG (not that it should become a BSG clone, but the same type of changes).

AFAIK they're planning an 11th movie (about Kirk and Spock's days at SF Academy) and a remastering of the original series with new special effects and theme music (think Star Wars). And yes, both will suck donkeyballs.

There will be new Star Trek eventually. But the people who control the rights are currently taking a "break" as far as Star Trek is concerned.

I too will concede that Battlestar Galactica is vastly superior to pretty much all Star Trek, with a few exceptions. A lot of the darker and more interesting themes presented in DS9 are similar to those in BSG. This isn't suprising; the creator of the new BSG was a prominent writer on DS9 for awhile.

But anyways, the point is that Star Trek can be good, and can be better. What it needs are fresh writers and fresh stories. A new world every episode does not mean a new a story, and this has always been a problem with Star Trek (and nowadays Stargate, to an extent).

Voyager was supposed to be interesting because they went halfway across the galaxy, where we wouldn't see all the races we were familiar with. The result? Poorly thought our replacement races. And who cares anyways, because Star Trek was always able to come up with new races/worlds/technologies for the right story, regardless of where the story was actually taking place.

Star Trek has always been known for its social commentary, and episodes that were highly allegorical in nature. These episodes are usually considered some of the best episodes (except for the heavy handed ones), but they still only lasted an hour. Star Trek has never been able to fully explore deep and meaningful themes because of its strictly episodic nature (except DS9).

            Um. Um.

            In conclusion...

Um. I think if Star Trek creators went into a new series thinking that there was some idea they wanted to delve into and discuss, rather than just thinking up new characters/settings/blah, it would make for a much more interesting Star Trek.

At least they were right on track with the hot chicks like 7of9 and T'Pol. Of course unfortunately good ST is not at all about hot chicks

(we need Ted again, he's without doubt the expert here)

I agree however that any new ST should take a completely new approach as Locutus said. However, I think here also is the prob that a some of the old school ST crowd will maybe not accept that. I personally wouldn't care about at all about continuity within the established ST universe if the new stuff would just be good - I rather would like to see a totally re-defined ST wich is good than another poorly, but more "conventional" ST.

The competition between both was probably good for both too. DS may have "stolen" some elements but overall it was pretty unique IMO. I consider it the best ST show of all.

I disagree about the movie sucking. J.J. Abrams is supposedly directing it, and he can do no wrong.

                          You know

the creator of Babylon 5 pitched the idea to the Star Trek producers first right?

What I like about B5 is that there actually was a plot and that lots (and in later seasons most if not all) episodes were part of that plot.

Star Trek had the first and last couple of episodes in every season part of a coherent plot and maybe, if they felt generous, another episode in mid season. All the rest were silly stand-alones. Meh.

Hm, but some were quite excellent stand alones. Story arcs are IMO nice, but not per se superior. But yeah, in B5 it was made very good, loved that too. Similar BSG now
