I had never heard about this before this week. And I largely agree with Ming. I'm generally with the fiction shouldn't be passed off as truth camp.

It was a "movie"... if people are stupid enough to believe it, that's their problem. It wasn't billed as truth or reality.Originally posted by Apocalypse
What about the Blair Witch Project? There are many people who thought it was true long after it came out.
If it was labeled or identified as fiction or make believe, I would have no problem with it. It probably still would have generated tons of interest. Instead, while it might generate some buzz for whatever event they will be hyping in the end, it's likely to piss some people off.
And I'm a firm believer that marketing shouldn't be pissing off potential customers

Blair Witch Project was passed off as a documentary. In doing that, it falls right in there with unethical.Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

What Sloww said. There was even a Sci Fi channel special on it which presented it as a documentary with interviews with various people treating it like it was real. Never once did they say it was just a movie.Originally posted by Ming

While I agree that marketing shouldn't piss people off, I wouldn't want to stop folks like these to experiment with these new forms of media.Originally posted by Ming

The truth may have caught up with these guys, but I think these clips have done both YT and consumers good. I think it lowers the threshold for people to produce such clips, whether scripted or real, because they have witnessed the size of the public and the fandom that surrounds it.
So, let's hear it for the new reality show on YT: "Merciless Ming, Diary of a Poly Mod"!
