          Yes, I do work my shoulder muslces as well. I just forgot to mention that. One or two of the machines that work my arm muscles also work my shoulder muscles.

                    I use dumbbells, not barbells, so safety considerations are basicall nil

                    If I drop a dumbbell on my head no spotter would be able to stop it.

                        If anything, the longer you use machines the worse it is. You might, for example, strengthen your pectorals without strengthening the associated stabilizer muscles. When you went to free weights you would then be able to lift a large amount, but might lose control of it halfway.

                            Where do you get this ridiculous idea that lying down (presumably you mean on a bench) or sitting up has anything to do with barbells vs. dumbells?
